The World Water Week, an annual gathering of water and sanitation professionals kicked off today in Stockholm, Sweden.
Hundreds of practitioners in the water sector have already arrived in the Swedish capital for the 23rd edition of the meeting which focuses on the theme “Water Cooperation – Building Partnerships”.
The Opening Plenary of the 2013 World Water Week, tomorrow, will discuss issues related to the overarching theme of Water Cooperation – Building Partnerships, such as how more effective cooperation can enable us to reach water wise decision and goals, spur implementation to help us build a better future, and how the benefits of cooperation tally with its costs.
Introductory and welcome addresses will be held by Minister Ms. Gunilla Carlsson, of Sweden, and Mr. Sten Nordin, Mayor of Stockholm. Mr. Jan Eliasson, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations will set the scene with a keynote speech followed by an interactive discussion with global leaders.
Important perspectives are brought forward by global leaders; Ms. Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO, Mr. Angel Gurría, General Secretary of the OECD, Mr. Peter Bakker, President of World Business Council for Sustainable Development, Ms. Yolanda Kakabadse, President of the World Wide Fund for Nature and Dr. Ursula Schaefer-Preuss, Chair of the Global Water Partnership.
