Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has explained that the Agency has no quality standard for second hand products widely known as ‘tokunbo’ goods that are imported into the country.
Reacting to allegations that the Agency is not monitoring the importation of used goods some of which are known to contain toxic chmicals, SON’s Driector, Lagos Operations, Mr John Sulle said :
“We don’t have standard for used products, because we believed that for those products to be regarded as second hand, they are simply sub-standards. We only reckon with genuine products and goods. Ours is not to ban second hand products, for we lack political will to do so…” Sulle has explained.
He called on Nigerians to develop the habit of patronizing quality products, maintaining that if the importers of second hand products do not find markets for them, they will be discouraged in bringing the products into the country.
