Lagos Govt. commended over remedial classes

Democratic Peoples’ Alliance (DPA) has thrown its weight behind Lagos State’s initiative of organising remedial classes for secondary school leaving candidates. The party however urged the government to also pay urgent attention to the dearth of school facilities.

Describing the government’s move as commendable, DPA said it was a fitting response to students’ cry for help. (more…)

Lagos news: INEC allays DPA’s fear on voters registration exercise

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured the Democratic Peoples’ Alliance (DPA) that the ongoing voters registration exercise would not be compromised.

The Commission gave the assurance at a meeting it held with leaders of Lagos DPA at their party secretariat in Jibowu area of Yaba Lagos. (more…)

Ngeria news:DPA warns Governor Fashola on Igando waste dump

 The Democratic Peoples’ Alliance (DPA) is drawing the attention of Lagos Governor Babatunde Fashola  and Commissioner of the Environment, Dr. Muiz Banire, to a looming epidemic around the Alimosho General Hospital, Igando, where a neighbouring acreage has been converted into a refuse dumpsite.

DPA warned that the operations could contaminate the Igando water-table and the surrounding air (more…)

Lagos news: Opposition party wants more funds for education

Lagos Opposition party-The Democratic Peoples Alliance (DPA) has urged the Lagos State Government to factor into the 2010 budget the United Nations’ recommended 26 percent of total expenditure for education, as well as establishing structures that will enhance the routine maintenance of roads. Climate change induced flooding may over run Lagos, says report

Lagos state Governor-Babatunde Fashola

 Climate change and population migration could put an additional 52 million people in the path of coastal flooding from storm surges in the next century, according to a report from the Center for Global Development.

The report looks specifically at the impact of storm surges on the land, populations and economies of 84 developing countries and 577 coastal cities within them. (more…)

We will not sack workers, Bi-courtney assures aviation unions

Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Limited (BASL), in a statement signed by its chairman, Dr. Wale Babalakin (SAN), said it was not true that aviation workers would be laid off, following the handover of the Lagos Airport General Aviation Terminal to the company

Bi-Courtney, in the statement, said: “The handover of GAT to BASL will not, in any way, result in job losses or disrupt smooth terminal and flight operations for scheduled domestic activities. The concerns of various unions and other industry stakeholders are being addressed by Bi-Courtney in consultation with relevant bodies. Bi-Courtney appreciates the services of all workers at GAT and looks forward to working along with them for an effective, viable and vibrant industry.”

Yar’adua receives more knocks over comments on Lagos councils

The Democratic Peoples Alliance (DPA) has cast its vote with Lagos State in its face-off with the Federal Government over the creation of more local governments, although it wrote off the councils for failing to make the desired developmental impact on the polity.

 

The party believed that the Federal Government over-extended itself in meddling in the matter of council creation as the Constitution gave it no role on the issue, apart from the fact that such interference violated the principle of Federalism. (more…)
