MEMORANDUM SUBMITTED TO THE HOUSE AND SENATE COMMITTEES ON PETROLEUM ON THE DRAFT BILL TO REGULATE THE PETROLEUM INDUSTRY IN NIGERIA. 29th July 2009.

Development Information Network makes the following submissions with respect to the Bill before this Honourable Body.

1.     We submit that the industry regulatory framework should engage deeper work than has been done in the bill, as broad as the Bill currently is. We therefore suggest that in view of the fact that there are other Bills before the National Assembly with impact on the industry, this Bill be withdrawn and be represented as three separate Bills as follows: (more…)

July 23, 2009 By: Our Correspondent Category: lagos

Democratic Peoples’ Alliance (DPA) has urged the Lagos State Government to impose and enforce handover deadlines on contractors handling projects in the state and to collaborate with the Federal Government to rehabilitate all major roads in the state.

The party said its investigations showed that contractors failed to respect set deadlines when executing building, road, drainage and other projects in the state.”

“Some of the road projects have dragged on for over two years, with the contractors mobilised to site and apparently running on the spot, with little to show for the project lifespan, carrying on as if the projects would last ad infinitum,” DPA said in a statement by its Lagos State Director of Publicity, Felix Oboagwina. Climatic change may displace 28million Nigerians by 2100

July 19, 2009 By: Our Correspondent Category: Niger Delta crises

Nigeria News

Climatic changes may led to the loss of 15000 square kilometres of the land in Nigeria’s Niger Delta and the displacement of at least 28 million people in the region by 2100, a research study has revealed.

The study  entitled the The impact of Sea level Rise on the Coastline of Nigeria conducted by Awosika, L. F., French, G. T., Nicholls, R. J. and Ibe, C. E. also states that a one meter rise in sea level by the year 2100 will cost Nigeria about $9 billion as a result of  human displacement and dislocation of livelihoods.

A Nigerian Non Governmental Organisation, the Community Research and Development Centre (CREDC) in a report prepared on this issue in June 2009, noted that: “while climate change will lead to increase aridity and desertification in northern Nigeria, it will lead to flooding in the southern part especially in the coastal regions. In many communities in the Niger Delta region, several houses have been abandoned by the owners due to floods resulting from heavy and brief rainfall, and many more areas in the region are vulnerable to floods”
