Aloysius Katsina-Alu was sworn in Nigeria's new Chief Justice Wednesday in the absence of President Umaru Yar'Adua, who is hospitalized in Saudi Arabia with an ailing heart.

Katsina-Alu assumed office at a ceremony presided over by outgoing Chief Justice Idris Legbo Kutigi at the Supreme Court complex in Abuja.

Ignoring calls for resignation over his ill-health, Yar'Adua has not formally handed over power and reports say that Nigeria is locked in a political deadlock.

Earlier this week, he signed a supplementary budget for the current financial year at a clinic in the Saudi Red Sea port of Jedda
