Nigeria: Immigration service get new Boss

President Goodluck Jonathan has appointed Mrs Rose Uzoma as the Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS). The Ministry of Interior said in a statement that Uzoma’s appointment took effect from 30 July.

Uzoma, until her appointment a Deputy Comptroller of Immigration, succeeds Chukwurah Udeh, who retired from the service in April after attaining the mandatory retirement age of 60 years.

The new Immigration boss becomes the second female Comptroller-General of the NIS.

Indian police in a fix over ex Nigerian convict

Julius Ojao alias Smith, a Nigerian, has been living at the Gorwa Police station in India for close to four months. Smith, a convict in a cyber crime case, is in the police custody while he awaits deportment. While Smith has been enjoying a lavish lifestyle, the police are in a fix as his expenses are mounting, most of which are being borne by the cops from their own pockets.

Lagos: Opposition party decries extra judicial killings

Democratic Peoples’ Alliance (DPA) has asked the Lagos State Government to institute an independent panel of enquiry, and ensure the Commissioner of Police respects the rights of 24 people arrested over the disturbance that broke out in the Egbeda area of Lagos after police shot dead a commercial bus driver.

Reps to debate tenant data bill

The Nigerian House of Representatives is to consider a bill which will require all landlords in the country to keep records of their tenants’ personal details for the purposes of security and public information.

The bill is titled, “A Bill for An Act To Provide for Landlords and Tenants Responsibility and For Other Matters Connected Therewith,” and sponsored Emmanuel Jime (PDP, Benue State). (more…)

Nigeria: Korean wants failed Super Eagles ‘stars’

The Korean Football Association has requested that the Nigerian national team bring at least half of their World Cup squad for a friendly in Seoul in August.

Nigerian black parents give birth to white baby

A Nigerian couple just got quite a surprise: Angela Ihegboro gave birth to a white baby with blue eyes and curly blond hair, reports The Sun, a British tabloid.

“Actually, the first thing I did was look at her and say, ‘What the flip?’” says Ben Ihegboro, the baby’s father, who came to Britain with his wife five years ago and now lives in South London with their two other children. He says infidelity is out of the question. “My wife is true to me. Even if she hadn’t been, the baby still wouldn’t look like that.” (more…)

Germany to assist Nigeria to solve energy crisis

Germany has declared its intention to assist Nigeria in solving its persistent energy crisis through loan financing under the partnership deal between the two countries.
