Lagos Governorship:Will Fashola run in 2011?

There is an air of uncertainty over who will be the flag bearer of the Action Congress (AC) in Lagos State, come 2011. The party is yet to decide who will represent it in the coming general election. However, some political observers still believe that Governor Babatunde Fashola should complete his second term, due to the marvellous projects he has embarked upon in Lagos State since he came into office. Lagos Govt. commended over remedial classes

Democratic Peoples’ Alliance (DPA) has thrown its weight behind Lagos State’s initiative of organising remedial classes for secondary school leaving candidates. The party however urged the government to also pay urgent attention to the dearth of school facilities.

Describing the government’s move as commendable, DPA said it was a fitting response to students’ cry for help. (more…)

Lagos news: INEC allays DPA’s fear on voters registration exercise

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured the Democratic Peoples’ Alliance (DPA) that the ongoing voters registration exercise would not be compromised.

Nigeria moves to contain swine flu

Nigeria, has enhanced surveillance in Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Seme and Idiroko borders with Republic of Benin to monitor all entries into the country after a nine-year-old American girl tested positive in the south western city of Lagos.

Lagos state Commissioner for health Jide Idris said Monday that surveillance teams were deployed at all border crossings to control inter-border spread of the H1N1 virus besides the state government has set up a combined surveillance team with the federal government.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of health said there is no cause for alarm as the American girl has recovered fully from H1N1 after five days of treatment. Health Minister Dr Babatunde Osotimehin said the father, brother, all school contacts and every other person around the girl have been tested and none tested positive to H1N1 flu.

Lagos gets 2,000 megawatt electricity plant

Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) and West-Pac Petroleum Incorporation, a US based firm, have agreed a strategic partnership to install a 2,000 megawatt (mw) of electricity plants in Lagos within the next four years.

 400 mw of electricity is expected to be generated by end-2010, with plans to develop 5 industrial clusters in Lagos. MAN member-companies are expected to benefit from electricity supplied from the power plant.

Ngeria news:DPA warns Governor Fashola on Igando waste dump

 The Democratic Peoples’ Alliance (DPA) is drawing the attention of Lagos Governor Babatunde Fashola  and Commissioner of the Environment, Dr. Muiz Banire, to a looming epidemic around the Alimosho General Hospital, Igando, where a neighbouring acreage has been converted into a refuse dumpsite.

Lagos news: Opposition party wants more funds for education

Lagos Opposition party-The Democratic Peoples Alliance (DPA) has urged the Lagos State Government to factor into the 2010 budget the United Nations’ recommended 26 percent of total expenditure for education, as well as establishing structures that will enhance the routine maintenance of roads. Nigeria News: Pressure mounts on Lagos state governor to appoint Works Commissioner

Democratic Peoples’ Alliance (DPA) in Lagos has called on Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola to relinquish the portfolio of the Ministry of Works and appoint a substantive Commissioner.

 

The party, in a Press Statement signed by its Director of Publicity, Felix Oboagwina, said the Governor’s performance on the seat these two years showed the Ministry needed the efficiency and devotion of a full-time administrator. (more…)

Nigeria news: opposition queries Fashola over N36b consultancy

The Opposition Democratic Peoples’ Alliance (DPA) has described Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola’s tenure so far as a bag of mixed blessings, but insisted that the party’s Candidate Mr.. Jimi Agbaje would have run a more humane, more democratic, more transparent and more accountable government had he won the 2007 governorship polls.

DPA, in a statement by its Director of Publicity, Felix Oboagwina, said that the two years have shown that Lagos can still work, although it blasted the government for harbouring waste in the system and paying no less than N36 billion to the Alpha-Beta Consultancy Limited from the internally-generate d revenue of over N240 billion Lagosians paid in taxes in the last two years.
