Lagos: Opposition party decries extra judicial killings

Democratic Peoples’ Alliance (DPA) has asked the Lagos State Government to institute an independent panel of enquiry, and ensure the Commissioner of Police respects the rights of 24 people arrested over the disturbance that broke out in the Egbeda area of Lagos after police shot dead a commercial bus driver.

Lagos Governorship:Will Fashola run in 2011?

Nigeria reviews bilateral aggrements

NIGERIA  is to review all bilateral agreements  with other countries to enable the country derive maximum benefits from the existing 376 agreements/ instruments.

Minister of Information and Communication, Prof. Dora Akunyili said the agreements to be reviewed or renegotiated, include all joint commissions, bilateral cooperation instruments, and memoranda of understanding. (more…)

Nigerian Football Federation impeaches President

Ahead of an impeding ban by FIFA, the President of the country’s Football Federation, Sani Lulu Abdullahi has been impeached along with first Vice President Amanze Uchegbulam and Technical Committee Chairman Chief Taiwo Ogunjobi.

Nine of the 13 members of the NFF Executive Committee,  met and voted to impeach the leadership of the soccer house, sacked last week by President Goodluck Jonathan. (more…)

Arsene Wenger to train Nigerian Coaches

Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, has agreed to visit Nigeria for seven days to educate Nigerian coaches on modern tricks of the round leather game and the best way to identify hidden talents in the country

This was the outcome of his meeting with Nigerian officials on Thursday at the Redisson Hotel, Sandton, Johannesburg.

Wenger met with the Nigerian representatives led by the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Alhaji Ibrahim Bio.

Others at the meeting were the Director-General of the NSC, Patrick Ekeji, and a former skipper of the Super Eagles, Austin Okocha.

After the meeting, Ekeji told our correspondent that the deliberations went well with Wenger.

Ekeji said, “Wenger is passionate about Nigerian football and he believes we can do better in the future if we work towards that.

“He has agreed to be with us to give our coaches useful tips to help our young players.

Football development is vital and we just have to embrace it.

“We know that Wenger is a coach that grooms young players and that is what we are looking at in Nigeria at the moment.”

Wenger however urged Bio to contact the management of Arsenal for a convenient time that will be fixed for the programme.

“The meeting was okay and I believe we can work it out soon,” he said.

Lagos Govt. commended over remedial classes

Democratic Peoples’ Alliance (DPA) has thrown its weight behind Lagos State’s initiative of organising remedial classes for secondary school leaving candidates. The party however urged the government to also pay urgent attention to the dearth of school facilities.

Describing the government’s move as commendable, DPA said it was a fitting response to students’ cry for help. (more…)

Lagos news:DPA calls on Governor Fashola to use perogative of mercy

Democratic Peoples’ Alliance (DPA) has asked the Lagos State Government to free those it is detaining in detention facilities throughout the state in the spirit of Christmas and New Year.

The party also demanded the freeing of all seized vehicles and business implements, like commercial motorcycles and buses, confiscated by the government and its agencies. (more…)

Lagos news: INEC allays DPA’s fear on voters registration exercise

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured the Democratic Peoples’ Alliance (DPA) that the ongoing voters registration exercise would not be compromised.
