Niger delta crises: hard times awaits criminals, says Amaechi

 Rivers state Governor, Rotimi Ameachi has pledged to make River states crime free, vowing to either prosecute and flush our criminals from the oil rich state.

“We are determined to flush out criminals out of Rivers state, either they are prosecuted or they leave out state”, said Amaechi while receiving the report of the Rivers State Truth and Reconciliation Commission, in Port Harcourt

Earlier while presenting the report, Chairman of the Rivers State Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Justice Kayode Esho, said his commission received over 200 memoranda and “was able to reconcile 15 communities who before the existence of the commission were at daggers drawn

Rivers State Truth and Reconciliation Commission submits report

Chairman of the Rivers State Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Justice Kayode Esho, identified the ‘divergent ills’ of the state as “cultism, chieftaincy, politics, insurgency, and cultism

Rivers State is saturated with cults and cultism. The Government itself acknowledged te existence of 100 cults, we listed additional 16 cults, and it is one of or recommendations that all these cults should be proscribed”, said Esho, a retired Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria while presenting a 572 page report of the Commission to the Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi in Port Harcourt today.

Responding to the recommendations, Rivers state Governor, Rotimi Amaechi assured that: “We know is shall be challenging to implement the recommendations of the Commission, but if its going to solve the crises we are in, I am going to implement them. This is not one of the reports that will be thrown to the bins”

The Rivers State Truth and Reconciliation Commission, was inaugurated on November 29, 2007, by Governor Amaechi barely one month after being sworn into office. Amaechi to find lasting solutions to the spate of violence and militancy that had pervaded the state.
