Deforestation on the increase in Nigeria, says study

Nigeria, Ghana and Togo have the biggest rates of deforestation.

A study of 65 nations, described as the most comprehensive analysis of tropical forests says Ghana loses 2.19% of forest cover a year, Togo 5.75% on the average from 2005 through 2010, while Nigeria posted 4%.

The study conducted by the International Tropical Timber organization said the forests in the countries surveyed cover a total of 1.66b hectares of which 761m hectares constitute the permanent forest estate.

The author of the report and a former Professor at the University of Oxford said the study by the timber group serves as a benchmark for tracking deforestation.
