Barely two days after the Ebonyi state Police Command announced the arrest of five notorious kidnappers behind recent strings of kidnappings which have put residents of the state on edge, suspected gunmen two days ago kidnapped the aged mother of the member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Darlington Okereke, Mrs. Mary from their community.
The latest kidnapping which is coming after almost two weeks of normalcy in the state was said to have taken place in Ugwulangwu, Ohaozara local government area of the state.
Though, details of the incident were still sketchy as at the time of filing this report, informed sources told THISDAY that the mother of Okereke who represents Ohaozara/Onicha/Ivo federal constituency was kidnapped from their family compound without any resistance from either security operatives in the area or the villagers.
When contacted, Police Public Relations Officer of the state police command, ASP Chris Anyanwu, denied knowledge of the incident, but family sources told THISDAY that the lawmaker was yet to make contacts with the suspected kidnappers, as frantic efforts were being made to locate their whereabouts.
THISDAY reports that the mother of the chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Dave Umahi, Deaconess Umahi was also kidnapped from their family house in Uburu, Ohaozara council area, late last month, but was released after about four days in captivity.
Apart from Umahi’s mother, several other people, mostly wives of political office holders have in the last two months become victims of kidnapping, though, government sources continued to deny that ransoms were paid to secure their release.
Meanwhile, the state police command yesterday paraded five persons said to have been behind series of kidnapping activities in the state, announcing that they have even confessed to the acts.
The PPRO in the state, ASP Anyanwu , who paraded the suspects before newsmen said t based on intelligence gathering and assistance of youths in the state, security agents were able to burst the ring trailing some of the kingpins to neighbouring Enugu state where they were arrested.
Among the suspects paraded were: Chidi Obiefuna a.k.a Fela, an indigene of Ezeagu, Enugu state and a final year student of Chemical Engineering, Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUTH); John Ezeani, Uchechukwu Okereke, Too-Chukwu Ogoh, and Michael Anoke of Okposi Ohaozara local government area of Ebonyi state.
The PPRO explained that the arrested suspects were behind the numerous cases of kidnapping in the state, especially that of the wife of Ebonyi state Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy Matters and Rural Development, Chief Matthias Adum; wife of a petroleum dealer, Chief Enyi Egbuna, one Reverend Joseph Okoye, Dave Agwada a contractor, a 19 year old boy and an expatriate working with Marlum construction company.
