The Presidential Candidate of National Action Council (NAC), Dr. Olapade Agoro has criticized the Federal Government white paper on electoral reforms, particularly the powers given the President to appoint the Chairman of Independent Electoral Commission (INEC).
Agoro said: “there is no way the person that is appointed INEC Chairman through this process would not do the bidding of the person who appointed him”
Alternatively, Agoro suggested that citizens should be empowered to nominate the occupant of the office of INEC Chairman, stressing that such a person should not be a card carrying member of any political party”
“The INEC Chairman could be nominated through a collegiate system. In U.S, most of the Judges are elected through that process. Whoever is so elected would be sent to the National Assembly for screening and confirmation”, Dr. Agoro explained.
