The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) yesterday said the moves by President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan to make political appointees automatic delegates is capable of killing internal democracy within the political parties, thereby inspiring party dictatorship as a precursor to real dictatorship.
A few days ago, a bill was sent from the Presidency to the National Assembly proposing that ministers and aides be restored as convention delegates.
The forum asked members of the National Assembly to reject the request and instead, seek to enthrone democracy that would be premised on the triple foundation of liberty, justice and common decency.
“For the Presidency to now try to use the opportunity provided by INEC request for more time and decide to send a bill to NASS requesting it to reverse itself and bring back political appointees as automatic delegates as well all as party caucus in the selection process is an attempt to take undue advantage of incumbency to put other aspirants at the short end of the competition during primaries,” ACF said.
It said the forum in its submission to the Uwais panel canvassed for internal democracy in all political parties because corruption starts from internal party politics. To this end, it said the forum suggested that Option A4 be adopted for selection of candidates.
