Nigeria: I will become Osun state Governor in two months time, says Aregbesola

Raufu Aregbesola

The candidate of the Action Congress in the 2007 Governorship election in Osun state, Engr. Raufu Aregbesola has expressed hope that he will be sworn in as the states Governor in two months time.

Reacting to the Ibadan Court of Appeal judgement which ordered a retrial of his petition by a freshly constituted tribunal, Aregebesola at a Press Conference in Lagos yesterday, expressed hope of emerging victorious in a fast tracked retrial, saying:

“To the good people of Osun state, be assured that you shall soon have a government of your own. I shall be inaugurated in two months time”

Aregbesola had filed a petition before the election tribunal challenging the victory of the Peoples Democratic Party candidate, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola in the 2007 Governorship elections in Osun state.

The Election tribunal dismissed his petition and he subsequently appeal to the Election appeal tribunal sitting in Ibadan, who gave a judgment yesterday, ordering the President of the Court of Appeal to constitute a fresh panel of Judges to hear the petition on the grounds that the former election tribunal erred by refusing to admit several evidences tendered by the petitioners.

Savouring his victory at the Court of Appeal, Aregbesola yesterday had harsh words for his opponents: “we clearly won in the elections, but a pack of brigades stole our votes…they are interlopers have taken Osun state hostage since 2003”

Aregbesola also supported the recommendation of the Uwais panel on electoral reform on the appointment of the Chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission by the National Judicial Council rather than the President, “as a progressive way forward and should be accepted”
