The chairman of Kuje area council, Hon Danladi Etsu Zhin, has awarded scholarship fund worth N10 million to indigent students studying in various institution for 2009/2010 academic session.
University undergraduates and their Higher National Diploma (HND) counterparts received N20, 000 each, National Certificate of Education and students studying for Diploma certificates received N15, 000 each while Federal Government College students also received N10, 000 each.
Zhin challenged the natives to enrol in schools as that will afford them opportunity to work in highly-placed organisations since education is the bedrock of modern day living.
He frowned that Gaube, the largest ward in the council with 45 villages, had recorded poor enrolment of students. He enjoined them to pursue education aggressively, and to especially study law and medical coures.
The council maintained that from January next year, all students at Unity Schools would no longer be offered scholarship, noting that the forms would also be increased to N500 from the official price of N200.
He, however, called on students to assist one another, especially individuals who are willing to acquire education and are not conversant with the education system.
Zubairu Amos, a 400-level student of University of Abuja who doubles as the acting Students’ Union President, Kuje chapter, thanked the chairman for giving out the scholarships, promising that the funds would be used judiciously.
He enjoined the students to shun any act capable of inciting violence, advising that the money should be channeled to their studies and not channelled wasteful purposes.
About 584 students benefitted from the scheme while the sum of N2.5 million was distributed to students at Kuje town.
