Nigeria loses N140b health grant to incompetence

The Health Minister Prof Onyebuchi Chukwu said since inception in 2002 ‘Global Fund has approved $1.48billion for Nigeria but only $500 million has been accessed.

This development, according to Chukwu, does not however stop the country from increasing its contribution to $30million with the donation of $10m to the just concluded Global Fund Third Voluntary Replenishment 2011-2013.

Chukwu, while making the donation, justified the increment, saying Nigeria stands to benefit more from the Fund being a contributor and a beneficiary of the Global Fund.

A statement by Rakiya Zubair, Special Assistant (Communications) to the Minister, said: “Nigeria has benefited enormously from the support of the Fund for the rapid scale-up of interventions in its response to AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria as well as in health systems strengthening”.
