Home Affairs Minister Carm Mifsud Bonnici discussed procedures for the repatriation of migrants to Ghana and Nigeria when he separately met delegations from the two countries this afternoon.
The delegations are in Malta to take part in a conference on illegal immigration.
The Ghanaian delegation was led by Quasi Apea-Kubi, Deputy Minister for the Interior. Head of Immigration Muhammad Babandede led the Nigerian delegation.
The talks focused mainly on the establishment of procedures for the repatriation from Malta of failed asylum seekers who originate from these countries.
A large majority of asylum seekers who are not granted refugee status or subsidiary protection by Malta originate from Nigeria and Ghana.
The Maltese immigration authorities require travel documents for every failed asylum seeker for repatriation to take place.
