Nigeria News: Legislators to cut pay
Nigeria Senators have decided to cut their monthly basic salary by 10% to save public funds in response to the global economic meltdown
Announcing this yesterday, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Information and Media Ayogu Eze, said:
“We looked at the issue of wage cut which the Executive has proposed and the Senate has authorised that our basic salary be reduced by ten per cent.
In fact, we have a small committee looking at the issue and the legal technicalities of bringing this about and the committee is liaising with the RMAFC and we have given them a mandate to cut our basic pay by ten per cent.
Every senator’s basic pay will be brought down by ten per cent. That is the mandate we have given to our sub-committee working on it.”
President Umaru Yar Adua had earlier proposed a cut in the pay of all public officers as part of cost saving strategies of the Nigerian government
