Nigeria news: Senators get N45m each for constituency projects

Projects worth N45m each are to be sited in the constituency of each Senator under this year’s budget for the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

A total of N49.O5b will be spent in funding the projects throughout the country.

Such projects must fall within three specific categories: education, health and water, Thisday newspapers reports.

Already, senators had been asked to send a list of their suggested projects and the locations of the project to the Senate ad-hoc Committee on Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) under the chairmanship of the Senate Chief Whip, Senator Mahmud Kanti Bello.

According to a letter dated April 14, 2009, signed by the Committee’s Clerk, Victor Effiong, and addressed to all senators, the list of projects would be coordinated by the committee and

sent to the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on MDGs.

Last year, the Presidency earmarked a whopping N60 billion in the budget for projects in the National Assembly members’ constituencies at N10 billion per geo-political zone.

But legislators said late last year that the projects which were to be funded through the MDGs office were not executed, thus raising concern as to whether this year’s MDGs allocations to the Senate and the House of Representatives would be released for the target-specific projects.
