Nigeria news: University workers protest salary deductions

OVER 500 workers of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ile Ife  in Osun state held a peaceful rally at the University on Tuesday protesting illegal deductions from their salaries since 2004.

The workers comprise those under the umbrella of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Non Academic Staff Union (NASU) Senior Staff Association (SSANU) and National Association of Academic Technology (NAAT)

Speaking at the rally, the OAU chapter chairman of ASUU, Dr. Ife Adewunmi said that the Federal government has already deducted 7 1/2 percent from their salaries from source pointing out that it was criminal for the university management to do so again.

The Vice Chancellor in a telephone interview later denied the illegal deduction describing it as blackmail.
