Nigeria News: Yar’Adua promises more investment for education
President Umaru Yar adua has said his administration would invest more resources on the education sector, because of its critical role in meeting the goals of Vision 2020.
Speaking through the Education Minister, Dr Sam Egwu at the opening of a three-day workshop on “a Decade of Open and Distance Learning in the Commonwealth: Achievements and Challenges’’ jointly organised by Commonwealth of Learning Forum, National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) and UNESCO by the Minister of Education, Yar adua said
“We are vigorously pursuing the use of Open and Distance Learning (ODL) through the establishment of open polytechnics. We shall further develop the Regional Training Institute for ODL, which the Commonwealth has established at NOUN to cater for West Africa,’’
“We need to redouble our efforts in promoting and making ODL more efficient and effective in order to meet the millennium development goals on education.“
It is our hope to count on the Commonwealth of Learning for support towards a more comprehensive and full scale development of ODL in Nigeria,’’
