Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka in a reminiscence on the failed third term bid of Nigeria’s former President Olusegun Obasanjo, veiling referred to Obasanjo as a ‘demon’, who taught he could turn himself to a dictator like “Zimbabwe’s Robert Mugabe”
Speaking in Lagos yesterday at a Civil Society gathering on Electoral reform, Soyinka lamented that several Nigerians were deprived on the opportunity of holding political offices because they stood on principles and resisted “a demon who taught he could become the Robert Mugabe of Nigeria”.
Professor Soyinka says the outcome of today’s re run and supplementary elections in Ekiti state will mark a turning point in Nigeria’s political development; adding that:
- Free and fair elections in Ekiti critical to Nigeria’s survival
- The election results must be seen to be transparent, clear and honest.
- All that we are interested in is that the wishes of the people must be represented.
