Nigeria Union of Teachers strike lingers on

Officials of the Oyo State Government shunned a scheduled meeting with leaders of the striking members of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in Oyo State, this Friday in Ibadan, thereby dashing hopes of an early resolution of the Teachers strike.

Comrade Olu Abiala, State Secretary of the NUT described Government’s action as unfortunate and disappointing.

Teachers in public schools in several states in Nigeria have been on a strike action for the past one week over the non-implementation of  an agreement reached between the Nigeria Governors Forum and the NUT on August 6, 2008, whereby the nine State Governments agreed to implement the new enhanced Teachers salary structure (TSS) before January end, 2009.
