MINISTER of Sports and Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Ibrahim Isa Bio has declared Nigeria has no plans to host the Commonwealth Games for now.
Bio told Tribunesports in Delhi that Nigeria was not prepared to host the tournament for now because of the level of sports development in the country.
Nigeria made a failed bid to host the Commonwealth Games in 2002 when former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, was made the Chairman of the Bid committee during the President Olusegun Obasanjo administration.
Bio added that Nigeria could not host the Commonwealth Games for the sake of hosting adding that “we cannot host and be relegated to the background by other countries,” citing the performance of India in the ongoing tournament to back his assertion.
Meanwhile the Federal Government on Wednesday paid the bonus of all the athletes who won medals at the Games.
Each gold medallists got $6800 while silver medallists received $3800 as bronze medallists got $3500.
Confirming the release of the bonus, Bio said “what we did was to assure the athletes that it is no longer business as usual when we make promises, we fulfil the promises”.
