Nigerian news:Osun Speaker charges LGAs on birth registration

Speaker Osun State House of Assembly, Hon. Adejare Bello has called on Local government officials in the state to wake up to the responsibility of creating enough awareness for birth and deaths registration.

Hon Adejare Bello expressed when the Assemly played host to the Inter-ministerial Committee on Vital Registration and Population.

Promising that as a body and as individual representatives, Osun Assembly will support the sensitisation, the Speaker added that Nigerians must cultivate the idea of preparing for the future.

In his address the Federal Commissioner of National Population Commission representing Osun, Dr. Duro Famojuro confirmed that with the 2006 headcount Osun State has moved up the population table from the 33rd position to the 17th, a development which he said must be maintained and improved upon.

Dr. Famojuro stressed that Census should not be seen as a political excercise, but a tool for sustainable development.

Noting that 24 billion naira was expended on the 2006 National headcount, the federal commissioner called on the Osun Parliament to collaborate with the Inter-Ministerial Committee set up by the Osun State government to ensure that there are enough notifiers and registrars across the State in respect of childbirth registratio
