OYO State Government has been confirmed to have expended a sum of N287 million on the procurement of science, home economics, technical and business studies materials for distribution to the 363 public secondary schools in the State in the last three years, the state Commissioner for Education, Professor Taoheed Adedoja has disclosed.
He dropped the hint while flagging off the distribution of the equipment at Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School, Oluyoro, Ibadan, the state capital.
To this end, he enjoined the benefitting schools to make judicious use of the materials.
While addressing students in the science laboratory, the Commissioner commended the State Governor, Otunba Christopher Alao-Akala for the procurement of the science laboratory and technical equipment.
Professor Adedoja explained that the state government distributed science equipment to 150 public schools in 2008, while 123 public schools benefitted in the year 2009. Also, in the current year, the state government expended 90 million to procure science equipment for 90 public schools across the state, he stated.
He further stated that Oyo State came second in the international NNPC/OPEC Science Quiz Competition held at Austria while students from the state also emerged second in the National Quiz Competition held at Abuja, by Petroleum Trust Development Fund (PTDF).
The commissioner then admonished the principals of the state schools to provide adequate security for the equipment in order to protect them from theft while urging students to make judicious use of the materials for their practicals.
