Three people are reportedly dead and 60 injured in a religious riot between members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria otherwise known as the Shittes Islamic sect engaged in gunbattle with the police, yesterday
The Shiites movement had earlier in the day embarked on a peaceful demonstration under police escort in Kaduna without a break down of law and order.
The police, acting on intelligent reports, mobilized their men to prevent the impending attack on them by the Shiite sect and to secure the lives and property of the people of the area.
The dead and injured persons were allegedly caught in a cross-fire during the exchange of gunshots between the police and some members of the sect, the report said.
In July, a militant Islamic group, Boko Haram, had unleashed mayhem on parts of the northeastern zone of the country, starting with Bauchi, the Bauchi State capital.
The crisis soon spread to other parts of the country like Yobe,Kano and Maiduguri. About 1,000 lives were lost
