Press statemet on Osun political crisis

Press statement

The Osun State Progressive Forum (OSPF) wants all Judicial process on the 2007 Governorship elections to be concluded before the end of this year, and to this end it has urged the President of the Court of Appeal to set up the machinery to fast track the process of retrial and conclusions of the petitions challenging the victory of Prince Olagunsoye Oyinloye in the 2009 elections.

Osun state is presently in a state of political flux, as two parties are laying claim to the political throne. The ruling Peoples Democratic Party believes it won the election and in the same vein the opposition party has for the past two years been challenging the victory and legitimacy of the Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola administration.

The failure of the Judiciary to confirm the winner of the April 2007 Governorship elections in the state has heightened political tension in the Osun and this is not good for the development process of the state. The political tension of Osun state is heightened by the judgement of the an Appeal court which annulled the elections of al the Local Government Chairman and Councillors in the state following a petition filled by the opposition Action Congress which boycotted the elections over alleged improprieties.

The people of Osun state have become increasingly divided into two contending and warring camps, whereas all hands should be on deck to develop the state. Every week there has always been accusations and counter accusations between the Peoples Democratic Party and Action Congress chapters in Osun alleging threats to life, arson, and other acts of political violence.

The must be an end to this political bickerings if Osun state must develop. Osun state cannot afford to suffer the fate of Plateau, Ekiti and Anambra where state of emergencies was declared because of political instability accentuated by political crises. To avoid this ugly situation, we therefore urge all political parties in Osun state to:

1. To respect the status quo and recognise that there is a government in place, whether it was legally or illegally sworn in. To this end, the present Governor Oyinlola administration should be supported and monitored to ensure the prudent use of all resources at its disposal.
2. We appeal to the Oyinlola administration to investigate and redress all past of political repression of the opposition and stop with any acts of political intolerance and intimidation of the opposition parties.
3. We urge the Action Congress, Osun State not to heighten the political situation through inflammatory press statements, but wait for judicial pronouncements on its pending electoral petitions.
4. We urge the President of the Court of Appeal to fast track the process of delivery judicial pronouncements on the Governorship and Local Government elections in Osun state.

The people of Osun state can not afford to wait for another two years to for a judicial confirmation of the winner of the Governorship elections. Any attempt to delay the court process will be prejudicial to the peace and security of Osun state.
5. Lastly, we invite religious leaders and prominent traditional rulers in Osun state to call the main political figures to order and advise them to sheath their swords
